MooSPEED IV - Build Diary

August 2002

This is the start of my build diary for MooSpeed IV, an R1-powered Fisher Fury. There has been a fair bit of preparation work - converting the front room into a garage, painting the walls white , etc. I've also made up a chassis stand from some 2 by 4 that looked sturdy enough - my other chassis stand is a trusty workmate. It is rated at 180kg so should easily be able to take half the weight of a car that will end up around 400kg or less before it comes off the stands.

Various parts assembled have been assembled in the pics shown. First job was to stick in the differential - thought it would take about 10-15 minutes as it's only 4-5 bolts. 3.5 hours later and having removed my knuckle skin it's finally in. I just know that it'll be like this from hereon in.

The it was a case of getting the rear suspension together, and I've also had my wheels and tyres delivered. Bit premature maybe but there was a group buy going with the Caterham racers for the exact wheels I had in mind. Would've been a shame to miss out.

The engine was sourced from Fishers as well - this is the only "old" bit on the car. It's a '99/'00 version so hasn't got the latest FI or anything but it should still be a stonker. Apart from this everything else on the car is brand spanking new so should hopefully be allowed a new registration once complete. You're allowed one reconditioned component and that's the engine.

Apologies for the poor quality of photos, these have been taken with one of those keyring cameras. A proper digital camera will be on the way soon but for now I've got car bits to buy.

It won't fit this car unfortunately but is there for inspiration - nice bit of carbon/ally honeycomb. Oh and I'm not allowed to display it over the fireplace...

Rear nearside spring Rear nearside spring and brake line in place. At this stage it's all new and wonderful - a proper meccano job.

Fairly bare chassis - engine in backgroundFairly bare chassis, it's been powdercoated black. My previous car build - the Westfield SE - had a bare metal chassis which I painted, that was nowhere near as good as this.
