MooSPEED IV - Build Diary

December 2002 - Part II

Unfortunately not much to tell yet although I've sourced a few more parts.

I've now got the voltage regulator, the new larger steering column mount, carbon-fibre sheeting for the dash and a carbon-fibre R1 exhaust can.

Rear hub finally on
Rear hub finally on in the correct way - misleading photos and vague instructions didn't help here. Took three go's as I had them on the wrong side initially. It's surpisingly easy to get wrong.

Fitted fuel line, this required the tank to be removed again, for the fourth time!!

I'll leave this off for the time being. I've mounted the pump high on the transmission tunnel at the front - I've been assured that the pump can drag fuel all that way. Surprising really considering that on the bike it wouldn't have to "suck" the fuel at all with the tank above it. Will wait and see on that one...

Handbrake extensionConnected up the handbrake only to find it's unusable.

It has been modified to allow an adjuster piece to fit. Problem is that this extends the lever point and makes it too hard to use.

Using both hands and all your might it will just reach two clicks on the ratchet, at which point the rear wheels are still not locked. Trying to figure out how to get the lever action back without the compensator hitting any mounting points.

Taller steering column mountExtra chassis bar - there to get in my way

The steering column front mount needed to be remade as the original one was way too short, fine for bolting onto fresh air. Reason is that my chassis has an extra bar which is right in the way of the column. I wasn't able to go inbetween this bar and the one at the back without it rubbing, managed to remove my lovely paintwork as well the only solution is to extend the top section of the column so that the UJ is higher up and this in turn raises the lower column up above the chassis bar.

I've picked up a Plays-Kool seat from Rich Miles (R1 Striker man) to try out. It's very tight - after an hour of sitting in it I wasn't able to stand massive case of pins and needles!! It's also really tight across my ribs.

I understand they do a wider one but this maybe just across the legs. Fits OK in the car but would probably foul the bodywork at the top at the shoulder pieces, two of them in the car would probably touch in the centre. Jury is still out on this one - even with the extended width, as with the Fisher highback seats - need to find that combination of comfort and grip. Will arrange to go to Tillett and see what they have to offer.
