MooSPEED IV - Build Diary

Leccy Reverse
After last months front-end measurements I've now been doing some measuring for an electric reverse to fit at the diff-end.

This is Gordon Griffins (BEC racer) version which uses a starter motor that drives in the opposite direction. My initial placement of the template that Gordon sent was underneath the propshaft, although this would have worked it hangs below the chassis line by a few centimetres. Mounting it above the propshaft it just about fits with some shortening (about 15mm) of the rear of the unit.

At least it's opened up opportunities for Gordon to fit the reverse to any IRS Fury without concern for the engine type.

Propshaft cock-up
I just knew it would happen, something told me that Rich Miles's experience of getting a propshaft flange to fit would occur with me - it's the way my luck runs The (Bailey-Morris) propshaft turned up, quite a bit heavier than expected but very good quality.

Only thing is that the front and rear flange were identical. The flange on the engine is a much smaller, rectangular flange so I could see without offering it up that it wasn't going to fit.

I spoke to Fishers to get a smaller flange which turned up next day, they call this a fireblade flange, FY1.1.
I warned of the problems that Rich had where he had to have it machined out to suit the longer sprocket length on the R1 compared to the Fireblade but despite that it turned up and guess what... didn't fit. Back on the phone again...

Here both flanges can be seen, on the smaller flange it can be seen that it is a solid casting whereas the large one has a large recess to allow for the centre nut;

A few new shiny bits added...

and a few more bits removed... now that's not the way to progress...

Carbs off...

...just hope they go back on OK !!
