MooSPEED IV - Build Diary

March 2003

Propshaft (continued...)
Following on from last months hassle with flanges, all was resolved with the help of a spacer from Fishers. I had to cut and file this down but it's all bolted together nicely now.

The propshafts on BEC's tend to be split-type with a centre bearing. I had wanted to go for the new-style Transit bearing which has "feet" mounting points rather than "ears" . My prop turned up with the old style bearing but I just couldn't face the hassle of sending back what with all the mucking about over flanges. Essentially it's just a question of different mounting points.

I'll be making my own bracket up as I didn't think the supplied one would (a) suit my exact requirements with regards to angling/height and (b) it seemed expensive for what it was. Perhaps it's just that the end of the budget is clearly in sight whereas the end of the build isn't. Oh dear.

Throttle cable
The throttle cable on the R1 comes out over the exhaust side so I'd decided to whip the carbs off and change the side the cable operated on. I removed and tried to modify the existing cable mount but that was never going to work so I ended up making up a bracket.

The bracket took absolutely ages to make due to the fact that I wanted to have it as neat and tidy as possible and ensure that the cable action was smooth and nothing was going to catch. The throttle stop for instance was slightly touching the bracket and when trying to remount the carbs I found I hadn't left enough clearance for the rubber rings that the carbs sit in.

Finally completed the bracket and re-fitted the carbs. I haven't hooked it up to the throttle yet as I want to get the pedals nicely lined up after the seat has been mounted. There should be enough cable to operate it though - another part straight off the bike - a few more quid saved

Sorry - no pics this month - don't know where they went ?!?
